The Inner Beauty of Our Gorgeous Grandmothers
founder-inspiration-Charla-Jones-grandmother

To my way of thinking, grandmothers aren’t gorgeous because of the beauty they possess, but more so for the beauty they bestow on us.

Some are eccentric and mysterious. Some fortresses during a storm. They are keepers of our traditions. We love them all and the more eccentric, the better!

Because who pauses to tell a story about a boring grandma? It’s her eccentricities and sharp edges that we find most endearing.

And then consider the Grandmother Hypothesis, which says our mothers' mothers give us an evolutionary advantage and are a key reason why we live so long.

As we focus our beauty lens on the women we call gorgeous grandmothers, here are a few things we love the most:

  1. She’s got the moves: We’re captivated by the way she used her hands and body, like when she rocked us to sleep or rubbed her achy sore spots. She danced and sang unabashedly. She cooked up meals and made baths, sharing the know-how of her many routines and passions.
  2. She’s fierce and formidable — back then and now: All praise to grandmothers speaking truth to power, forming groups, working in the community, church or museum, holding up signs, marching for causes and lifting their voices to make the world a better, livable place.
  3. She’s a believer and knower of things: Grandmothers believe that it’s the little things that matter, especially in taking care of the small stuff, like devoting their precious attention to caring for us when we were small.

Grandmothers are creators of sublime rightness and wonder in our world. They are protectors against harms real and imagined and most of all, generous givers of free love.

Amongst the menial tasks and busywork of family life, you'll find some of her most shining moments teaching us how life’s simplicities can be amazing and worthy of celebrating.

From weeding the garden to setting the table or brushing her hair, these memories influence us long afterwards in setting our own self-care standards.

You’ve not been heard until you’ve had the experience of a grandmother listening to you tell a story.

She embodies the art of listening in the tender way she asks after every juicy detail, offering empathy and enthusiasm at just the right plots points.

And I never tired of my grandmothers’ stories. They invited me into their lives, sliding my feet onto the imprint of theirs, feeling the impressions of what it must have been like to walk in their shoes.

“Everything’s going to be alright,” they tell us and so we keep moving on into the uncertainty of our experience, encouraged by our grandmothers who believed and confirmed that grace and light are always near.

My grandmothers taught me how to have authority over myself. Under their protection, I learned how to be touched and moved by the world, to let myself be coaxed beyond my vulnerabilities and be open to life’s questions.

So here’s to my two dearly beloved, much adored and sorely missed gorgeous grandmothers whom I cherish and love always — and to yours!
