Be a Player: Make Your Own Rules in the Beauty Game

how to make your own rules in the beauty game

“Beauty always has rules. It’s a game. I resent the beauty game when I see it controlled by people who grab fortunes from it and don’t care who they hurt. I hate it when I see it making people so self-dissatisfied that they starve and deform and poison themselves.“

          — Ursula K. Le Guin on Beauty

Lately I’ve been talking a great deal about beauty: how we pursue beauty, the purpose of beauty, and the business of beauty and skin care.

And this inevitably leads to talk about beauty rituals—which for some, is the same thing as the rules of beauty.

It’s true that beauty can feel like a game, with winners and losers—but if beauty is a game, how do you play it, who makes the rules, and how do we learn them?

Even if you inherited the most refined rituals, you can still feel like a child on Halloween playing dress-up, going door-to-door—or product-to-product—in the hopes of scoring a treat.

Beauty doesn’t have to be a ghoulish endeavor if you take the time to cultivate self-care rituals and invest in quality products chocked-filled with wholesome, nourishing ingredients that make you want to care for yourself.

Create your own rules in the beauty game by taking just few minutes of mindful attention as to what’s going on with your body-mind connection. This is the foundation to being beautiful no matter what you decide to wear or how little or much makeup or hair goop you use.

Focused attention is the first move, not the finishing touch—because your beauty is not revealed in the last steps before you walk out the door, but in the first steps you take upon awakening.

It’s being in the shower and giving your attention to the water or to how you feel while you lather up. It’s taking the time to apply moisturizer and appreciate the feel of your own hand on your body.

So, what's your play on the beauty game? I say, make your own rules. Play big and go home—with daily self-care to your body, the place where you and your beauty live.

You’re not the kid knocking on the door asking for candy on Halloween. You’re the owner of the house and you can make your own rules.
