3 Ways to Traverse Autumn's Threshold

As summer’s lazy hot days were winding down, I wrote about the purpose of doing nothing (yes, doing nothing has a purpose). But, what about now, when summer feels long gone?

The paradox of being purposeless is that it’s very purpose lies in allowing us to wander about the complex world within us, and not cycle through the ever-present demands outside of us.

Now, as we stand at autumn’s threshold, the more thoughtful among us are beginning to account for the past nine months of intention and effort.

“Ah, September! You are the doorway
to the season that awakens my soul...“

          — Peggy Toney Horton

Set against the reflection of summer’s bounty—even since ancient times, September has been a time of new beginnings.

So even as we revisit our goals or vision for this year, this is the perfect time to transition our actions and ambitions for a graceful finish—fears and self-criticism be damned.

Eleanor Roosevelt, who must have known fear well, said, “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face… You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”

Indeed, we may be standing at the threshold, but crossing it can seem overwhelming.

Am I where I need to be, where I want to be, where I intended to be by now? How do I renew my passion and purpose to realize my goals?

  1. First, let’s rekindle our year’s earlier resolutions and refine them along our newfound thinking following summer’s purposeless respite. We desire to measure up and be bountiful.
  1. No judgments! New beginnings need not start with something going wrong. So instead of judgment, we really need encouragement—a big, strong push to catapult us over the lull of summer’s indulgence and procrastination. It’s a balancing act, so be forgiving of yourself. Keep the faith with your deeper calling by simply being present to what is most authentic in you.
  1. Where do we find the time? One way to start anew, “to do the thing we cannot do,” lies right before us—and it doesn’t conflict with our daily demands: the simple act of skin care is the perfect means of harnessing our beauty and our wellness.

This is why I speak so often about how a simple skin care routine for the body can play a truly significant role in our sense of living from an awakened presence.

This time of year, we naturally feel inclined to take stock of ourselves —and it is the perfect time to reassess our actions and align them with core beliefs.

Change is subtle but steady. Even our skin changes, everything needs scrutiny.

By taking just five minutes to focus on yourself via the skin care experience, I think you will find the inspiration to do the things you haven’t yet done so far this year—and realign your inner dialogue with your outer ambitions.
