Be Resilient.

In talking about why I created Eu2Be, I often speak of the benefits of attending to our bodies and exploring the life within as a means to awaken our creativity.

My thoughts this week are of Nelson Mandela, an extraordinary human being who certainly had a supreme imagination. I say this because creativity begins with the imagination—so when we celebrate his life, are we not also celebrating his creativity and humanity?

By his example, we see how imagination and resilience are the handmaidens of possibility. He endured the nearly impossible conditions of imprisonment with profound resilience while cultivating an enormous inner reservoir of beauty and creativity.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu picked up on this too, when he told PBS's Frontline, “I think he does have a great deal of inner resources, and that 27 years was partly responsible.”

Mandela lived from the inside out because he understood that sometimes the only way through is going in. Freedom is an inside job.

Danna Faulds invites us in her poem to “Go in and in. Be the space between two cells, the vast, resounding silence in which spirit dwells… and turn away from nothing that you find.”

And Mandela never did. Who among us can ever forget the glorious display of his embodied spirit when he emerged triumphantly, taking beautiful strides to freedom? Or the images of him dancing at the 2012 World Cup?

He leaves us with a beautiful concept of freedom—one that we all must continue to strive to bring about.

Thank you, Nelson Mandela. Your imagination and resilience transformed the hearts of your enemies and in doing so, placed an indelible hand on the hearts of all mankind.

Love the idea of freedom as “an inside job.” A lovely reflection on Madiba’s legacy of creativity and resilience to free not only himself but his people.

Nice. It takes time to reflect and really know oneself. In this season of dark days and celebrating the lights we can take time to listen .
